Couples Therapy

Learn more about my Pre-Marital Workshop here.

We all know that we have to maintain our cars if we want them to keep running smoothly and not leave us stranded. But often we don’t remember that our relationships require maintenance, too, to avoid breakdown. However, we can’t just take our relationship to the shop to get it fixed, we have to learn how to fix and maintain it ourselves. That’s what I can help you do.

I chose my graduate program based on two things: I wanted to study the research on romantic relationships with experts in the field and learn from an excellent marital therapist. My research has always been on relationships and I worked with highly distressed couples as a graduate student and presented my work with them at professional conferences. I also had the opportunity to be immersed in a training program designed to help couples recover from affairs. The treatment model views affairs as a relationship trauma that indicated a breakdown in the primary relationship that can be healed. It focuses on healing from the trauma, understanding the breakdown, and finding forgiveness from a genuine place of understanding.

Today, my work with couples also incorporates my training as an Imago Relationship Therapist. I believe that most difficulties in romantic relationships result from two major things: lack of skills and our family of origin experiences. I teach communication and conflict resolution skills that most of us weren’t taught—like how to be good listeners, how to truly understand each other, how to avoid defensiveness and blame, and how to manage our anger and communicate lovingly even when we’re upset.

Our families of origin provide a blueprint for our experiences in romantic relationships. That’s why we often end up marrying someone similar to our opposite sex parent. And that’s why the same person who seemed so perfect for you years ago now seems perfectly able to send you reeling like no other. I can help you stop that from happening!

I work with all kinds of couples (dating, married, premarital, divorced, gay, straight, bisexual…), am open to various relationship contracts (open marriages, polyamory), and believe that healthy sexuality can be expressed in a variety of ways. While I support marriage/committed relationships and love to help people heal their relationships and stay together, I see my role as helping a couple figure out what’s best for them. Sometimes that means helping a couple end their relationship peacefully and with awareness, respect, and loving kindness.
